*** July 20 update *** Weekly conferences have been removed. 201 is now planned as an online lecture + in-person lab.
This post contains course information for students interested in taking Chem 201 in Fall 2020. The plans that are described below are subject to change. It seems unlikely, however, that activities that are currently described as ‘online’ will switch to ‘in-person’. The reverse is more likely.
The format for Chem 201 has been changed since the preregistration that took place last spring. Instead of the two 80-minute lecture sessions each week, there will be three 50-minute lectures. There will also be a weekly lab lecture (50 minutes) and a weekly laboratory session (4 hours). Structural descriptions of these pieces (more detailed than those provided on IRIS) are presented below.

Students will generally need to register for lecture and laboratory (students who register for a lab are automatically registered for lab lecture). All three pieces can be completed by remote students and it is generally expected that all students will register for every piece. Any student, in-person or remote, who is interested in completing only a portion of Chem 201, for example, just lecture+conference or just lab+lab lecture, must contact the instructor, Alan Shusterman ([email protected]) to discuss this before registering.
Lumen makes significant investments to ensure our digital courseware is accessible, allowing students to learn using superior interactivity, multimedia, and a variety of accommodations for individuals with varying abilities.
PDFs offer an inferior learning experience compared to the richness and interactivity in our digital courseware. A PDF version of the textbook is available as a print alternative. The PDF does not include interactive content such as simulations, videos, and quizzes and is not vetted for accessibility. For these reasons, we do not recommend using the textbook in the PDF form. The offline version should be used as a print backup rather than as the primary textbook.
